Apple Moves to Tighten Control of App Store

Sony said Apple had rejected its e-book app because it did not route book sales through Apple’s system.

    Up until now, Kindle iOS app users could buy a book on the web, then send it to their iPhones, or iPads. They could not buy the book from within the app.

    Bibliofuture note: I think in the end this will be good for Amazon. Android is getting bigger and bigger. If Apple clamps down to much they are just going to drive up prices on their platform. More people will move to the open platform of Android.

    Well those companies are gaining access to all the Apple customers through being allowed to have an app in the app store, no wonder they’re expecting a cut.

      Does the maker of your home Pc get a cut of the money on any software you buy. I love how because this is Apple how much people are willing to get violated. People and publishers in general are not going to allow Apple to jack book prices up 30 percent. There are some Apple fanboys that will allow the company to do anything but I am not one of them. I do have an ipad mini (iPod Touch) but have never had a major interest in buying an iPad. If I buy a tablet or a smart phone I am going for Android.

        Although an equally apt question or set of questions might be: Does Amazon pay Microsoft 30% for all books purchased using Windows PCs? Does eBay pay 30% off the top? And so on…

    They are not locked down systems like Apple is.
    I think it’s totally stupid but I can see why they are doing it. By forcing (yes forcing I agree) their rules on them and making them go through their system they have the right to say and require what they want if the retailers want access to their system.
    Do Windows take a cut? No, but you could change the operating system to make it work in exactly the same way and totally control everything that you install or buy on their system (much as Amazon can do with the Kindle, they still have control over what you’ve downloaded if they want to delete it).
    Call it the cost of doing business. If you want to use Apple products then you pay, if you don’t want access you do without.
    Now, changing the rules now after things have been worked on is wrong. If they’d announced this before say IOS4 was released as fair warning that would have been better.

    With the way that licensing works the makers of componants, the makers of the OS all give away the rights to allow you to do what you want with the system (insofar that they take no responsibility beyond what they are designed for). Apple simply haven’t done that. They have kept control of everything and made it a closed system. As everyone knows who has made an app or sells/distributes on itunes you sign an agreement with Apple to use their system. Don’t like it? Don’t use (or sell through) it. Why now is what I’d like to know.

    And book prices don’t need to go up 30%, maybe Amazon and publishers could take less of a cut? Radical idea I know!
