    job seekers: read this column!
    As a former member of many many academic library search committees, I think Emily makes some good points and outlines the situations you may run into on your job search, especially in academic libraries.

    Be careful to pay attention to detail–I did and accurately guessed most of the major dysfunctions in my current position. Unfortunately, I’ve seen worse and accepted the position anyhow–but was realistic enough to understand why the former person fled after only a few months.

    A real life example: if you ask a question about “how good communication is the organization” and no one will answer, that’s a hint!

    The positions are out there, but some libraries which have constant openings have them for a reason folks!

    No doubt, do NOT be afraid to ask why are there so many positions open. Go with your gut if you don’t feel like you are getting an honest answer you aren’t. When you meet with the director do they listen to you or talk at you? Ask them what their vision is — if they cannot articulate what their vision is for the library there is a problem.
