3 Nice Librarian Stories

A few good librarian profiles from around the country I spotted this week. Not a typical librarian looks at London-Silas Shavers, the new head librarian at the Jessie J. Edwards Public Library in Memphis,TN. Librarian driving force for renovation is on Beth Foulks over in Sioux City,IA, former second grade teacher who is the new librarian at Ponca Public School. Last but not least, Librarian enjoys integrating life passions, life talks with Jenine Lillian, “a whimsical surprise: a librarian who is a reluctant reader; a knitter who doesn’t use wool or organic materials; a wanderer who plans to stay put.” She’s in Fayetteville,AR.
It’s good to see so many good librarians getting coverage in their local press.

    Stereotype Busting
    A knitting librarian that doesn’t use organic wool, now that sure is breaking a stereotype! This time she’s gone too far. She is now on double-secret probation!

    Not a typical librarian…
    maybe because he’s not actually a librarian. It seems like he would probably do a good job but he’s a music professor/children’s performer who is going from circulation desk clerk to head librarian?

    I feel like there is a part of the story missing.

    It’s interesting how the reporter also seems to feel there is some of the the story missing. Adding that he has some library experience seems to be an attempt to fill in that gap. Of the 3 stories here, it seems that only one “librarian” actually has an MLS or equivalant?

    Yeah, liking anime and having been a reluctant reader in her youth isn’t all that big a deal. She knits, has a cat, does crafts and likes watching birds.

    Whereas I:

    • Like anime
    • Don’t have a cat
    • Like kung fu movies
    • never listen to NPR
    • can’t knit
    • rarely read mysteries
    • sometimes wear above-the-knee skirts
    • rarely read memoirs or pop non-fiction like “Into Thin Air” or “The Orchid Thief” (I get my fill of this in short form from the New Yorker)
    • Like punk rock, stoner rock and some metal
      • Pro stereotype: Have always read a lot and don’t wear heels or lipstick at work.
