24 hours of library service on 9/11

    The “other” September 11, and ours
    In remembering the atrocities of September 11, 2001 it would be instructive to also remind patrons of the “other” September 11 – the one in 1973 when the United States backed the bloody coup in Chile that installed Agusto Pinochet as “dictator for life” of that country. As many of you probably know, Pinochet was arrested in 1998 for human rights crimes committed during his reign, then released on technical grounds. He has been under house arrest since 2001, but has yet to stand trial.

    Drawing attention to Chile’s September 11 is not to minimize the impact of New York’s September 11, nor is it to point accusing fingers at the US. Rather it is to demonstrate the ugent need to bring peace and justice to all peoples of the world, a goal which education and an open mind can help to achieve.
