The Scotsman Reports On A FORMER dictionary editor has taken the bull by the horns and compiled a book to name and shame Britain’s most annoying clichés.
Clichés such as “fall on your own sword” and “a safe pair of hands” are identified among the worst offenders in the tongue-in-cheek guide. Betty Kirkpatrick, 63, who has been editor of Chambers Dictionary and Roget’s Thesaurus of English Words, said she had compiled the “Usual Suspects” to alert the public to “lazy and shoddy language”.
