Skully flung this Onion article about Wikipedia our way.
Wikipedia, the online, reader-edited encyclopedia, honored the 750th anniversary of American independence on July 25 with a special featured section on its main page Tuesday.
Subheadings include “Origins Of Colonial Discontent,” “Some Famous Guys In Wigs And Three-Cornered Hats,” and “Christmastime In Gettysburg.” It also features detailed maps of the original colonies—including Narnia, the central ice deserts, and Westeros—as well as profiles of famous American historical figures such as Benjamin Franklin, Special Agent Jack Bauer, and Samuel Adams who is also a defensive tackle for the Cincinnati Bengals.
About time !
I think it is about time. Most of the people working on Wikipedia are doing it without compensation. They need to organize and get representation. They need a living wage. We can all agree that is is not possible to raise a family on nothin….
What? What did you say? Oh, Onionized.
Um, nevermind.
Wikipedia also got Colberted
(Pronounced “coal-bared”.)
Stephen Colbert did a bit about Wikipedia on The Colbert Report last night, encouraging viewers to edit the entry for Elephant to falsely say the number of elephants has tripled in the last 6 months. The entries for the show and for Elephant are locked down now. Check out the history page for Elephant.
Link to a video of the Colbert Report segment on YouTube. New word: Wikiality.
Re:About time ! 🙂
Thank you, Miss Littella.
WIkipedia isn’t too bad..
They have a passel of nerds that check updates all the time. For instance, if you put additional information about a person, say Larry Ellison, in the “notable alumni” section of the entry for The University of Illinois people jump right on it.
Look in the history section and you’ll say that changes to Ellison’s information – such as, “Big Time Jerkwad”, “polesmoker” and “Major Asshole” – were changed back after a couple or three minutes.
But, if someone were to add in their father’s name under notable faculty/alumni, the little, weasely, editorial nerds will let it sit until a change is suggested/made by someone who knows what they are talking about.
