WI Committee OKs bill expanding library powers

Beware, overdue book borrowers. Wisconsin lawmakers are thinking about sending out the library police.

The state Senate’s Elections and Local Government unanimously approved a bill Tuesday that would create exceptions to privacy laws protecting library users’ identities so libraries could report delinquent borrowers to collection agencies and police. The committee vote clears the way for a full vote on the Senate floor.

    WI Library Community Fought Hard for This
    Actually WI libraries fought hard for this. Different libraries were getting conflicting local advice on whether they could engage third party collection agencies like Unique or local police to pursue egregious delinquencies (we’re not talking five and dime fines here) as well as kickback from local elected officials on whether they could get their “library business” done. This law would level the playing field across the state and help libraries (especially our small and rural libraries) get recompense or returned material when their local municipalities have indicated they cannot share information to assist them in this process.
