WHO to downgrade Toronto status

Because a single case of SARS appears to have been exported from Canada to the US, the WHO is reclassifying Toronto to a Category C, which means that there has been transmission outside a contained setting. While this does not mean that a travel advisory will be automatcially issued, it raises the likelihood. WHO has said it will give 24-hour notice before issuing an advisory. Toronto officials are meeting Friday to discuss Toronto. More here.

What this means for the conference-bound is even more uncertainty. ALA has said that it will cancel the conference if an advisory is issued before June 19. Monday the 16th is the last day the conference will be cancelled for reasons other than a travel advisory. The only other reason I can think of is that enough vendors might cancel to put the conference below a critical mass (meaning, I think, that it would be a better deal, financially, to cancel altogether). I\’m not at all a SARS alarmist but I am mightily annoyed by the drama of it all. A little too last-minute for me.
