Proponents of a transatlantic Booker-style Prize, with American and British novels competing against each other, will have had their case strengthened in 2004. Which was the true novel of the year? The Line of Beauty by Alan Hollinghurst? Or The Plot Against America by Philip Roth? The book-of-the-year selections in the British press had the two novels running neck and neck. In subject matter they could hardly have been more different; but both attracted ardent support among the critical fraternity.”
