Where to keep your data truly safe…

Anonymous Patron writes “Think the data on your PC is so important that losing it would have the same, or worse, consequences for your family than you being hit by a bus? Peter Cochrane Does.

With the recent rise in terrorism, cyber-attacks, political instability and environmental changes due to global warming, he recently got to thinking about the ultimate back-up locations.

Two locations stuck out as being ideal for the mass data back-up of all our most vital data: deep in the ice of the Antarctic or, perhaps even better, the far side of the moon”

    Back up your data!
The importance of data backups cannot be emphasised enough. Whatever you do, back up your data! I religiously back up my data using the grandfather-father-son system. I would imagine this would come naturally for librarians and archivists.

I’m not that much of a pessimist
The moon or under several meters of ice, I think it would be really hard to get to the backup copies.

The Mormons are known for their archives (and among the Genies their online records) and they have really super secure archives in some mountain in Utah.

Another firm is providing similar storage and has been for several decades. Perpetual Storage (which sounds like something one does to the dead) has its own cave drilled in to the granite of some mountain in Utah. It would be easier to get your backups from here, but not nearly as fun as the moon or the Antarctic.
