Web site asks readers to “release” their books

Bob Cox sends “this intriguing piece fromSt.LouisToday.com about letting go of much-loved books in the hopes that someone else will find and appreciate them. Adherents to this practice even have a convention.

‘At first it might look like a store security tape running in reverse.

A woman walks nonchalantly into a store with something under her coat. She tries to dodge store personnel and avoid the all-seeing eyes of security cameras. She finds a deserted aisle and, when the coast is clear, reaches up and places a book on the shelf before briskly exiting the premises.

It’s been described as “reverse shoplifting” – another book lover releasing a treasured tome into the wild in the hope someone else will find it, read it and love it. Dozens of such books will likely be deposited in the St. Louis area this weekend as members of BookCrossing, a Web site for bibliophiles who believe in setting their books free, hold their annual meeting here. The convention runs through Sunday at the Holiday Inn Oakland Park near the airport.'”
