UT-Austin Undergraduate Library to be converted to “information center”

According to this story in the Daily Texan, all the books are being removed from the Undergraduate Library at UT-Austin to make way for more computers and study spaces. Says Fred Heath, Vice Provost and director of the University Libraries, “We are getting the books out, in order … to build a 24/7 learning space with more room for students and more technology.”

    “Removing” vs. “redistributing”
    UT is clearly not getting rid of the books, according to this article. This trend seems to be pretty common, nonetheless. I am most concerned about handing over a “learning center” to the IT department as a whole, though.

    Remember that “learning” these days is “cutting and pasting”. Research, understanding, comprehending, interpolating…… who cares? Fill in the blanks and git-r-done.

    Cutting and pasting is also difficult to do from books. It may involve photocopying, reading, retyping or correcting OCR data. That takes too long. Paper is so passe.
