mdoneil writes “The E-Plates initiative in the UK will permanently affix number plates to vehicles which can be read by RFID readers up to 100 meters away. The active RFID plates provide greater range than passive RFID devices by using battery power.
UK residents are some of the worlds most watched citizens. All number plates on vehicles heading into London are currently photographed for security and law enforcement purposes. There are more video cameras in the London public spaces than in the rest of Europe combined say some sources.
Are RFID license plates an invasion of privacy, after all number plates are made for identification and must be displayed? Does the active RFID tag invade privacy more, or does it simply make data collection easier?

Got it
The slippery slope to 1984
One more step down that path to the techno-totalitarianism postulate by Harry Harrison in his To The Stars trilogy. The SPCA of Canada, in Toronto, has been implanting chips in pets they’ve been adopting out for some years. Unless they’ve discontinued that program. I wonder how long it’ll take until they start implanting . . . oh, say immigrants, then criminals, then lazy bastards on the dole, and then: heck! — why not everybody else too?
I can just see the incident to trigger that last step being a mix up in a maternity ward. Some dolt will say, “We Have To Protect The Children”, and demand a law that a newborn must be implanted and registered immediately at birth to avoid any future mix ups.
Re:The slippery slope to 1984
Both of my cats have RFID chips implanted. I want them found and returned if they go astray. It was also a requirement of the UK Pet Passport scheme which allows me to take my pets to the UK and then onward without extensive quarantine.
I’d have no problem having one inserted in me. It will make identification of the corpse easier.
An Important reminder
That we in the United States do have freedom left to defend. Let’s not give it up under under the anti-terror banner like Britain has!
