UK proposes RFID number (license) plates

mdoneil writes “The E-Plates initiative in the UK will permanently affix number plates to vehicles which can be read by RFID readers up to 100 meters away. The active RFID plates provide greater range than passive RFID devices by using battery power.

UK residents are some of the worlds most watched citizens. All number plates on vehicles heading into London are currently photographed for security and law enforcement purposes. There are more video cameras in the London public spaces than in the rest of Europe combined say some sources.

Are RFID license plates an invasion of privacy, after all number plates are made for identification and must be displayed? Does the active RFID tag invade privacy more, or does it simply make data collection easier?
