Library emptied in bid to fight closure:
A town has emptied its library in a bid to fight plans to close it down. People in Stony Stratford, near Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, have spent the week withdrawing their maximum allowance of books in protest against council plans to close it as part of budget cuts. And today they said the plan had been a success, with all 16,000 books withdrawn from the library.

    So?
    That just means that noone can get any books they want, no books can be sent out to other branch libraries. There are staff that can no longer do a majority of their jobs, probably part-timers or volunteers that can do no work and might be being sent away.
    These people have deprived the local area of a major resource. I know that is the idea, shock tactics and all but really they are just making themselves look like idiots. What about the people that actually want to be using the library now?

    Also it doesn’t matter if every book has gone or no books go out, large parts of running the service will still need to be paid. Wages, heating, water, electricity etc will all still need to be paid. You could freeze the book/dvd/cd budget for a year and see what that did but the big costs will still be there.
    It is of course unfair that libraries get hit but you need to find alternatives, get them to close other things down, or find other areas that actually have waste. Or indeed, realise that life isn’t fair and sometimes things have to change.

    The idea is to acrue SO many late return fees that the library never needs to worry about funding again? 😉
