UC Santa Barbara Makes eBooks Available Free Online

The University of California’s digital library will make more than 1,400 books from UC Press available for free online, in XML format, according to this story from the UC-Santa Barbara Daily Nexus. Of this number, about 400 will be available to the general public. The remainder are available only to UC faculty and students, but will be released for the general public in about two years.     Nice…but has some bugs apparently
    I’ve been browsing it and it looks like they have some interesting things even in the public area, but I’ve already tripped across quite a few titles that will show with a public flag in the listings but which are actually restricted.

    If you click on the Public Only Subject List, which is what I’m browsing, it has a list of subjects and how many items within them are public. But in many of the categories I’ve tried so far, clicking on the link leads to a larger listing–all of which have public flags. When you go farther in, the item is restricted. Based on what I’ve seen so far, the true public ones come up first on the list, then the faux-public listings show up. Look at “Indigenous Religions” as an example if you are curious.

    Bugs aside, this is a wonderful site they are providing and I like it a lot (even if most of the books I’d really like to browse are falsely showing up as public in the listings).

    To follow myself up, it looks like the real public items have green flags saying public, the fake ones have blue flags saying public. I’m going to e-mail them in their comments area, so hopefully they will fix it soon and people can look at my comment here and think I’m imagining things. *laugh*

    I give up–that isn’t consistent either. Though I’m not sure why they have different colored flags showing actually (it isn’t because I’ve clicked on the items because I haven’t). I’ll stop rambling now, really! 🙂
