Someone used something called a “Book” to set up Ubuntu on an old computer. Apparently a book is a man page printed on paper.
My point is this: a book is a more reliable source of answers than a forum or a Help icon – a book doesn’t go black unexpectedly, it doesn’t time-out a session, it doesn’t flame you as a clueless newbie when you ask a dumb question, and above all, the best of them give you a ”why” to do something as well as a “what”. An old gaffer like me wouldn’t stand a chance of gaining any geek creds without BOOKS!
Books over Forums
You nailed it! I always rely on the book before I look for help, even through tech support.
Ayup…..
I have to agree, which is why I keep checking out the book “Cleaning Windows XP for Dummies”…..
It’s all I want and need to know + more that might be for more technically inquiring minds. Plus there are many illustrations, so I know what it is I’m suppose to be looking at, when I’m trying to follow instructions.
It also has a glossary to explain them high techie terms, that I so do not have a clue about what they mean!
>^..^<
You are kidding right?
One can see the obvious reason why a well-thought-out written work might help someone with a straight-forward simple process (i.e. installing Ubuntu). However, the process of troubleshooting complex technical issues, learning diverse and in-depth technical topics, and participating in the creation of new technical works requires a wide variety of learning resources and experiences. Books are not a miracle cure for technical knowledge work: they are just one technology that helps for certain problems.
6 of One, Half Dozen of the Other
I have to admit, “Ubuntu for Non-Geeks” helped me make the switch and convince my husband that it was do-able. The forums, however, are actually very good for those little nagging things like making WINE work with my emulators and software my Sys Admin instructor was having us download.
WINE
Umm, WINE is an emulator. . .
Yes, but my current
Yes, but my current Commodore 64 freeware emulator, which I like, is geared for Windows, so I had to figure out how to run an emulator IN an emulator.
Oops!
Sorry about that! I haven’t tried to use WINE for awhile, but you might want to check out wineX, too.
