Garry Trudeau is donating his take from sales of the latest Doonesbury book, The Long Road Home, to Fisher House, a foundation that “offers family members of wounded troops temporary housing at little or no cost during their loved one’s hospitalization.” In addition, publisher Andrews McMeel is donating 10% of its profits from the book to Fisher House. Story in Stars and Stripes.
The book is a collection of Doonesbury strips following the character B.D., who is wounded as a soldier in Iraq and has a leg amputated.
Here’s a challenge for Ann, Rush, O’Reilly, etc
Trudeau and his publisher are proving that you can be against a specific conflict like the Iraq War and still support the troops. Health care is a big need for the returning wounded, especially since the VA is struggling to make ends meet, thanks to the War Party’s brand of “Support the Troops.”
Note to Greg: This ain’t about you!
Let’s see Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly and the rest of the wealthy conservative pundit/authors start donating THEIR book proceeds to troop charities. I don’t care whether they pick Trudeau’s charity, my favorite soldiers charity, or some other — as long as benefits get down to the front lines or to the returning veterans.
The troops would win. How about it?
Re:Here’s a challenge for Ann, Rush, O’Reilly, etc
Struggling to make ends meet? Where did it say that?
I don’t doubt that those people already do donate, both Rush and O’Reilly have supported various causes in the past, Rush’s particular focus has been the Leukemia Foundation, iirc. I don’t demand anyone donate to anything unless I’ve done it myself and even then I don’t expect them to tell me they’ve done so. For some charity is a private affair.
Note to Daniel: Pick a fight with a conservative, you pick a fight with all conservatives. That’s why we win elections.
Re:Here’s a challenge for Ann, Rush, O’Reilly, etc
Why is it picking a fight to ask members of the War Party to show their “support for troops” in any way besides bashing war opponents for their supposed lack of patriotism? (Again, Ann et all, not you.)
Why is it a bad thing to highlight a celebrity whose generousity is bringing comfort to troops and their families? Why is it wrong to publicly hope that others follow their examples?
