Transy Rare Book Thieves Sentenced

SisterSanctuary writes “The four young men who stole rare materials from the Transylvania University library in December 2004 were sentenced yesterday to terms in federal prison. In a related story, Transy librarian B.J. Gooch describes her ordeal; she was attacked and subdued by the four during the theft.”

    They were traced by their email address used to set up the appointment in the rare book room and to the auction house. Good! Technology often benefits librarians.

    I feel great compassion for the librarian that was battered and robbed it is unconsionable that someone would kidnap, batter and imprision a librarian in order to steal their collection, and make no mistake that is what the fine young men did.

    I have absolutely no sympathy for the four convicted. I hope they learn a useful trade while serving their sentences as their lives in polite society are over. Should they wish to remain a productive part of society they should find a trade and work diligently at it and refrain from further transgressions of the law as there is no other redemptive action they can undertake.

    At least it was not state prison, perhaps they can actually move past the punishment they so richly deserve and become productive citizens. As to the one who said he can take it in stride, I can only fathom his tune will change once in prison. I never have been imprisoned, but I have worked in a county jail and that was enlightening. I even avoid overtime parking now.
