Tracing Migrations of African-Americans Through History

The distinguished Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in New York, a division of the New York Public Library has announced a new website on the cumulative work of dozens of scholars and historians of Black History:

  • IN MOTION: The African-American Migration Experience .

Thirteen periods of migration are studied, only two of which (transatlantic and domestic slave trade) were coerced; eleven others were the voluntary movements of resourceful immigrants of color (Haitian and Caribbean migrations are included).

The project was underwritten by a $2.4 million congressional appropriation, sponsored by the Congressional Black Caucus and administered by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Here’s the story of the site’s roll-out: Washington Post .
