There’s a new TV ad on in Scotland for the softdrink named
Irn Bru.
In the ad, a Glaswegian man dressed in a cuckoo suit warns the librarian “I’ll shhh you, you tweedy old crow” after she tries to keep him quiet when he bursts in through a bookcase.
The ad shows the cuckoo handing a student in the library a can of Irn Bru 32 and saying in a strong Glasgow accent: “Wakey, wakey! Smart Alec are ye? Eh? Well get this doon yer pie-hole clever clogs. Irn Bru 32. Pure mental stimulation in a can.” This isn’t the first Irn Bru ad to call attention to itself…here’s one of their previous ads.
Despite several complaints , the ad will continue to run says the manufacturer, AG Barr.
Who cares?
I’m getting really tired of the “librarians need to break down librarian stereotypes.” There’s pierced librarians, kung fu librarians, belly dancing librarians, and on and on and on. All of them looking to break down that stereotype.
Get over it.
There’s stereotypes for damn near any job in the world. Why do you think the World’s Smartest Garbageman character in the Dilbert comics is so funny? Because we don’t equate intelligence with garbagemen. I’m not sure why, because I’ve spoken to mine recently. He’s cool, and I see him every so often in the library. He’s not stupid. Besides, have you seen what garbagemen get paid? Sometimes I think I’m in the wrong line of work. So who’s stupid there?
Police are power tripping Irishmen. Accountants are nerdy little number crunchers. IT guys are geeky folks who wear D&D t-shirts. Bankers are penny pinching misers. Politicians are evil bastards. Almost every job has a stereotype and no amount of “sterotype busting” is going to remove that.
Well, now that I think about it, politicians really are evil bastards.
So be a librarian. Be proud that you don’t fit the stereotype. Or if you do have a hair bun, glasses on a chain, and shush people; be proud that you do fit the stereotype.
