The Country House Library Auction

Here’s an Interesting Auction at Christie’s The Country House Library, Including the Library of Brocket Hall.

This sale coincides with the launch of a new series of auctions entitled The Country House Library with focus on books from private country house libraries. The sales, to be held twice a year, are a return to the traditional mixed categories of literature, topography, travel, and library sets, which typify these libraries.

The first sale in the series features the library of Brocket Hall, Hertfordshire, as well as books from Knebworth House and a property in the Channel Islands.

From 1850 to the 1980’s country house libraries were the principal source for the antiquarian book trade in Britain. In modern times the rise of thematic book collecting has brought about more specialist auction sales and book dealers.

They have a picture gallery, and catalogue. It happens 25 March 2003, 10:30 am, 85 Old Brompton Road, London.
