I just wanted to say a public Thank You to everyone who kicked in a buck or twenty to help me pay for LISNews. Over the years LISNews has cost me hundreds of dollars, but this year will be different thanks to everyone listed below. I’ll send out personal thank yous to everyone, but I also wanted to let everyone else know LISNews is all paid up for 2007.

Long time readers of LISNews news know that LISNews isn’t a big corporation, it’s an all volunteer effort. We’re just a bunch of bloggers who post stories in our spare time. Over the past 7 years we’ve moved from server to server, and while we’ve found a good home finally, it’s not free. I alone pay to keep things running, and do all the work on the backend. I pay $40 a month for hosting, and though I really do love LISNews like a son, I can’t afford to throw away 500 bucks a year, so this year, like some years in the past, I’m asking for your help.
Last year the Google Ads paid for the server, but this year I’d like to keep it ad free if possible, and go begging for the $500+ I need to pay for hosting (minus the taxes I pay on the money I raise) our little community.

Tax? What tax do you take out? Have you thought of setting up a 501(c)3 not for profit corporation for this baby? It seems at first glance it would be an appropriate vehicle to limit any tax liability. Then again it may cost more to fool around with that than to run the whole thing for a year.

Anything ya’ll throw my way is considered regular income, so I pay state and federal taxes. I lump it in with all the LISHost money in “schedule c” so I don’t get in trouble. I have a few extra bucks taken out of each pay check at my day job so I don’t end up owing at the end of the year.

Exactly, it’s a bigger pain to do that would really be worth it. If we had more visitors, more active users, more of everything, it might be worth it, but now (especially now with 2 babies) I just don’t have the time.

FYI, becoming a 501(c)(3) runs in the area of $500-700 to submit the form. It is not a difficult process in itself, but there is a significant time investment (you also need to name a board and all the other crap that goes along with that). Frankly, I would not bother with a site this size. Once you get into the $10k+/year range, then it might be worth it.

I think that asking the readership for help in paying for LISNEWS is quite reasonable. I have no problems with paying for my tech newsletters, library association memberships, and other activities that help me in my profession. I don’t know how many people are active readers — a lot, I think — but if everyone sent in, say, $10, that would probably take care of the bill for a while. I’ve sent Blake payment for a month. I challenge you all to do your part in keeping this resource going.

501(c)3 Forms
I am in the process of filling out a request for a 501(c)3 status for my local library’s friend’s group. It is a pain in the behind. We have a lawyer doing this work pro bono, but he insists that we do the work, he points out what needs to be changed or added, we re-submit, he criticizes, until it is ready. This is about $3,000.00- $5,000.00 worth of legal services, which is why it is so difficult to get folks to help out with this.
But the real advantage of this is in wheedling money out of other institutions. We are already by definition a 501(c)3 organization. But jumping through the hoops and getting the paper that says so will make it easier to ask for grants and accept donations.
But is it agravating.

Blake, I just made a payment but I too would have no problem paying a “subscription” fee of some sort and I would imagine many others would as well – this is too valuable of a resource to not support it!

Re:Hear Hear! … Warrior Librarian is now ‘advertising free’ (with no web hosting costs) due to a single – commercial – sponsor. In exchange for paying the hosting fee, the sponsors company gets Exclusive Rights to a *single*, unobtrusive link to their website (which in fact is library related). Warrior Librarian doesn’t accept any other advertising – and yes, it is all volunteer-created. Works for our commercial sponsor, works for us. Worth considering?
