Anonymous Patron writes “Texas groups want more on condoms in books is an AP Article on interest groups in Texas that are calling for four publishers to add information about condoms to health textbooks being considered for classroom use by the State Board of Education. More Here and Here. They say The state’s required curriculum, known as the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, requires that health books “analyze the effectiveness and ineffectiveness of barrier protection and other contraceptive methods.””

The strategy. Get tested together before sex.
The strategy get tested together before you have sex works better. If so called safer sex practices and condoms really worked the epidemic would be over. For so called safer sex practices and condoms to work they need to be used diligently. Such diligence is not within human nature. The strategy get tested together before sex does more, see also http://NotB4WeKnow.EditThisPage.com
Re:The strategy. Get tested together before sex.
Where are the stats proving your little process works? I don’t see any anywhere, so how can you say it works better than condoms. Well, okay, no sex, but until they develop drive through blood testing, condoms will have to do. Someone out for a one night stand sure as hell isn’t going to bother getting tested “together” with his/her partner of choice. Regardless of your moral stance on one night stands, they do happen, and will continue to happen. And I don’t really see getting tested “together” as something many couples would do anyway. It’s just really creepy, if you ask me.
Oh, your “testing together” would also be considered a “so-called safer sex practice” along with condoms. I don’t think testing will make a big difference. So, what happens if one partner tests positive for an STD? Do they still have sex? If so, then they’d have to use a condom…
I do agree for condoms to work they have to be consistently used–they’re not that’s why we still have STDs kicking around (not just AIDS, btw). So to say condoms are a failure because people don’t use them is akin to saying aspirin doesn’t work for headaches when people don’t take the aspirin.
Kids should be made aware of all the options, from chastity to using protection. I think kids should be encouraged to abstain from sex while in their teens, not because I’m a prude or sexually conservative, but because I think they’re not mature enough. Despite what they may think. But teenage sex, like one night stands, will continue to happen.
And, frankly, condoms, and encouraging condom usage, is far safer than not using anything at all.

Re:The strategy. Get tested together before sex.
Where are the stats proving your little process works?
There are no rate of infection statistics for the general population.
Would you have sex with somebody you just met who tells you
they have an infection and that if you get it
you could die?…
I don’t see any anywhere,
so how can you say it works better than condoms.
You and a potential sex partner get tested together before sex,
an infection is detected and the information can be used to
prevent further infection.
Well, okay, no sex, but until they develop
drive through blood testing, condoms will have to do.
Someone out for a one night stand sure as hell isn’t going to
bother getting tested “together” with his/her partner of choice.
Regardless of your moral stance on one night stands,
they do happen, and will continue to happen.
And I don’t really see getting tested “together”
as something many couples would do anyway.
It’s just really creepy, if you ask me.
What about it is creepy?…
What about finding out you or your potential sex partner has an infection?…
Oh, your “testing together” would also be considered a
“so-called safer sex practice” along with condoms.
I don’t think testing will make a big difference.
So, what happens if one partner tests positive for an STD?
Do they still have sex?
If so, then they’d have to use a condom…
With test results ambiguity is reduced. They can decide
together using the information.

The rate of sexually transmitted infections among doctors
who work in std clinics is no lower than then general
population.
Kids should be made aware of all the options,
from chastity to using protection.

their teens, not because I’m a prude or sexually conservative,
but because I think they’re not mature enough.
Despite what they may think.
But teenage sex, like one night stands, will continue to happen.
Most people will not do the strategy get tested together
before having sex, will not use so called safer sex
practices diligently nor use condoms diligently.
Nature has other plans for us.
It is the powerful biological imperative.
People are free to do the strategy.
Doing the strategy does not require diligence.
And, frankly, condoms, and encouraging condom usage,
is far safer than not using anything at all.
Parents can get tested together and be a model of
good health behavior for their teenagers.
It is not enough to tell kids. Being an example means more.

Doctors working in std clinics have sexually transmitted

There is a pregnancy rate for heterosexual couples attempting to
use condoms to prevent pregnancy. They do not use condoms every
single time.

Re:The strategy. Get tested together before sex.
Slash – Let me be the prude here.
It seems the accepted, standard refrain since Dr. Elders tenure as Surgeon General has been “If you’re going to do it, then use a condom.” I’ve never understood this rationale.(for teenagers that is)
Let’s be honest. The price for sex (teens) can be emotionally destructive, if not deadly. Condom campaigns implicitly reinforce the decision to have sex for the unitiated. That’s wrong. Teen sex is a bad and potentially life changing decision.
Nunneries, chastity belts, or maybe good ole fashioned honesty, if you truly care about someone, sex should wait. Condoms notwithstanding.
Re:The strategy but only half the problem. 😉
“Nunneries, chastity belts”? Why are the girls being singled out for this coercer abstinence? Boys are half the problem!
Re:The strategy but only half the problem. 😉
Why are the girls being singled out for this coercer abstinence? Boys are half the problem!
I agree, but my issue here isn’t with assigning blame. It’s about reality.
I employ 10 to 12 student workers in my library. Roughly twenty percent are unmarried young women (late teens), either with child or children, trying to sort their life out. (Those boys that we agree share equal blame have often moved on to other conquests). Aside from their paltry Federal Work Study funds, these young women are off to a very difficult start in their life. Often alone, without help of family or friends. Hence those chastity belts I mentioned.
FWIW I just recently had one of these former students visit me last week. She just had another child, (the sperm donor was kind enough to send her packing half-way through the pregnancy)and decided to give it up. Heart wrenching to listen to this young mother talk about giving up her daughter. Particularly as she is showing me photographs of the child. Obviously, by way of her discussion with me, something that will trouble this young woman for the rest of her life. I did tell her that in my opinion, considering the alternative she could have chosen, she made the right decision.
Of course this is just the emotional side. Consider if that “boy” did wear a condom, which would have prevented the pregnancy, but had AIDS.
Re:The strategy but only half the problem.
Thank you for the clarification. I just get a little defensive when it seems we’re being picked on! You’re a nice person and I’m glad people have you to talk to so openly at your library.
Thanks…
for the kind words!
