Ten most important comic books of the 1990s

Anonymous Patron writes “The ten most important comic books of the 1990s: The 1990s was an incredible decade for comics. More people were buying and reading them than ever before and, in turn, more new publishers and new titles came into being. We had the formation of the superstar independent in Image Comics and the birth of the still unequaled VALIANT Universe, a high water mark in storytelling, as well as a host of others trying to imitate the two. Gimmick covers and variants were all the rage, but we loved them and (don’t tell Marvel) we still do. We were all going to be rich because the generic hot book of the week was going to be the next big thing. Well hindsight is 20/20 and with that in mind, let’s chart the Ten Most Important Comic Books of the 1990s.”

    90s comics equal 70s fashion
    I don’t think Richie Rich has been in print since the 80’s and then only in reprints.

    What a sad list. Compared to what happened in the 80s with Dark Knight Returns, Watchmen, V for Vendetta and this decade with Identity Crisis and right now with Marvel’s Civil War I think the 90’s are just a blip on the radar. (Mind, I don’t necessarily recommend all the stuff I just mentioned but they are and will remain much more memorable then Spawn or Authority)

    Kurt Busiek’s Astro City
    I don’t know about most of the items on that list, but I would definitely agree with the inclusion of Kurt Busek’s Astro City [#7 on the list]. It’s definitely one of the best new comics I found in the 1990s. Interestingly, Kurt Busiek is on the list twice as he’s also the writer of the fifth item, Marvels (as is Alex Ross who works on both).
