Tech Friday: Library Web Site 2.0

says Further discussion and reading led me to design six pillars of Web 2.0 that we wanted to use as the foundation for rebuilding our library Web site. These six pillars are as follows:

1. Radical decentralization
2. Small pieces loosely joined
3. Perpetual beta
4. Remixable content
5. User as contributor
6. Rich user experience

    Getting Carried Away

    “Wikis for library instruction classes are one space in which we envision users creating and maintaining content side-by-side with librarians.”

    When I read stuff like this, I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. At the very least, such an ambition while noble in itself, kind of misses the role that the academic library plays particularly in the life of students.

    Students aren’t dying to embellish their college library websites. They’re there to pick up materials and get the hell out.

    Academic librarians need to realize this or they’re going to wind up spending a lot of time (and money) building websites that nobody will use.

    Did anyone say ‘portal’?

    Library websites like this is a dream….
    Library websites will never be designed this way, particularly with user input, since librarians fear that users know more than they do, and they are unwilling to give control to users.

    Well, librarians are going to have to listen — otherwise they’ll be out of business. Basically you find out what your visiters want and you give it to them, big time. But that doesn’t mean all solutions are appropropriate for all situations.
