Teaching Students to Swim in the Online Sea

A nice pro-information literacy article from the New York Times explains the importance of knowing how to use information resources and suggests that people outside librarianship need to get more involved in promotion, creating standards, etc.

    You can say that again…
    My husband and I have been having this conversation since his middle school invested in wireless technology. I was chagrined to hear that the school librarian has never provided any instruction to the students about how to evaluate the information they find on the web. Granted, most of the teachers have already suggested quality sites to the students for specific projects, but there are always more to be had.

    I’ve offered to come to the school and “Teach the Teachers” about evaluating web content and search engine results. Apparently the principal doesn’t think it’s a necessary skill.
