Stressed out Librarians

As a former special ed and regular ed teacher and current school librarian, a parent to a teenager and third grader who also has the stresses of teaching 27 classes a week PLUS running a 15,000+ item collection library with a volunteer-only staff:
I can comment that public librarians get those unruly kids, their parents, the town politicians, those administrators and any other person who walks in the door in a unstructured time period and they do it on a salary that shows it’s a female dominated profession and much lower than that of any public school teacher. (In fact, it’s probably lower than the school custodians’ salary.) Public Librians work at least one day out of every weekend and they deal with the worst of public life that can get themselves in the door. All age groups, all the time. They train volunteers, run summer reading programs, attend professional development and are reading, reading, and reading all the time so they can give the gift of the love of books and all during an already jammed professional schedule. And they have done all of this after gaining advanced degrees, often more than once or twice, at their own expense.
Public librarians are the best bargains of any service a town provides. And they are often overlooked, unappreciated and misunderstood.

Sure teachers have incredible stress. However, they only are with students in a structured setting for approximately 180 days a year so the opportunity for stress to occur is much less just by logistics. Even though teachers aren’t the most respected profession on the planet, librarians are considered even more as servants in our entitled society.
Wonder why they have an incredible level of stress?
