Stolen DVD’s Add up for Libraries

Today’s Stolen DVD’s Add up for Libraries brought to you by WVNS-TV – Ghent,WV. The Morgantown Library started carrying DVD’s about 18 months ago and it has around 500. Director Sharon Turner says three or four DVD’s a week are stolen. She says they’ve tried to do things to help stop it, like keep the DVD’s behind the desk. But with the collection growing, she says it’s impossible to continue doing that.

    Yes. We have.

    I don’t know the city or county; but if there are branch libraries with secure storage space, then I suggest spreading the inventory among those branches.

    Libraries aren’t alone when it comes to unsecured DVD inventory. According to the August 1, 2005 issue of Video Business only 42% of rental retailers used what the author’s called “the ultimate anti-shoplifting strategy: closed inventory” for their DVDs.

    Large chain renters and regional franchises can afford to absorb theft losses. Public libraries with stretched budgets can’t. If you want to keep a DVD collection available for all your patrons, then IMO, it’s time to find space behind the counter.
