Stars win battle of the books price war

The Sunday Times takes a look inside the “pile them high, sell them cheap” philosophy they say has pushed up sales of the most popular titles during this, the busiest period of the year for the book trade. They say this has meant that the bestsellers this autumn are up, at least in volume, by more than 5% over the same period last year with huge sales for the memoirs of John Peel as well as cookbooks such as The River Cottage Family Cookbook and Rick Stein’s French Odyssey. Yet in the week ending last Tuesday, the money taken at the tills was down, simply because the discounts were so considerable.
