Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy: Fundraising and Support

Plato writes “Fundraising and Support:
The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (SEP) needs your support. Over 950 professional philosophers are donating their time and labor to collaboratively write, referee, and maintain our reference work. To cover the annual costs of administering and supporting this volunteer effort, Stanford University has partnered with the International Coalition of Library Consortia (ICOLC) and the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC) for the purpose of building an endowment for the SEP. While the library organizations attempt to raise $3 million for the SEP over the course of 3 years (primarily from libraries at academic institutions offering degrees in philosophy), we here at Stanford hope to raise $1.125 million from private individuals and corporations during that same time period.”

    I’m sorry…

    Not to step on any toes, but I’m here wondering if I am the only person thinking of Majikthise when reading the words “professional philosopher”?

    “Under law the Quest for Ultimate Truth is quite clearly the inalienable prerogative of your working thinkers. Any bloody machine goes and actually finds it and we’re straight out of a job aren’t we? I mean what’s the use of our sitting up half the night arguing that there may or may not be a God if this machine only goes and gives us his bleeding phone number the next morning?”

    I think you are the only person thinking of majikthise when you read the words “professional philosopher.” What is this person trying to say? Looks like a lot of pretty words with no substance. Excuse me while I go thumb through my St. Thomas.

    Perhaps I should be less of a nitpicker. Ahhh, the comfort of fake philosophy (I wish I could show non-offensive emoticons right now).
