After an extensive executive search, the South Carolina State Library Board of Directors had only to look slightly north for its top candidate. David S. Goble, currently of Charlotte but with Palmetto State ties, has been named South Carolina State Librarian. He will begin his tenure with the SCSL on March 19, 2007.
Goble’s background is unique and includes a blend of staff and management experience in commercial and nonprofit settings as well as different library settings, both public and academic. He most recently served as Dean of Libraries at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte where he lead the effort to establish that institution as a technological leader in community college libraries. Under his leadership the College converted to a web-based library system, participated in a state library supported 24/7 reference service (one of the first community colleges to do so), and instituted instant messaging based reference.
Prior to his service with Central Piedmont, Goble’s library experience included stints at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Library, North Carolina State University Libraries, and the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Before his library career, Goble spent some eighteen years in management positions in the banking industry. He was assistant vice president of South Carolina National Bank in Columbia, and vice president of NationsBank, Charlotte. He also served as a captain in the US Marine Corps and is a Vietnam veteran.
Goble received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English at The Citadel where he was a Regimental Commander, Commander Summeral Guards, and a member of the Presidential Advisory Committee. He earned a Master of Arts degree in American Literature at the University of South Carolina and a Master of Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is a member of the American Library Association, the North Carolina Library Association, the North Carolina Council of Community College Library Administrators, and is the immediate past president of the Metrolina Library Association.
