The director of the Pickens County Library in South Carolina cancelled the youth summer reading program entitled “You Never Know at Your Library” after the minister of a local church complained and people threatened to picket the library. The Greenville News article cited parents’ complaints about occult topics in one session of the mystery and suspense oriented program. The only event left on the calendar is the final one – pizza tasting.

The South Carolina State Library had a photo contest for National Library Week. Staff members at libraries across the state submitted photos of librarians doing what librarians do.

Greenville, SC — Upstate residents wishing to express condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the tragic shootings at Virginia Tech may send messages through a condolence book at their local library.

The Greenville County Library System, in conjunction with the Virginia Tech Alumni Association, Palmetto Chapter, is providing condolence books through Thursday, April 26 at each library branch for residents to sign. The books, generously donated by Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, will be delivered to the president of Virginia Tech.

Beverly James, Executive Director of the library system, received her masters degree in public administration from Virginia Tech. “Having a personal connection to the Virginia Tech community, I am glad we can provide a way for local residents to reach out to the individuals affected by this tragedy.”

David S. Goble has been named South Carolina State Librarian. He will begin his tenure with the South Carolina State Library on March 19, 2007.

After an extensive executive search, the South Carolina State Library Board of Directors had only to look slightly north for its top candidate. David S. Goble, currently of Charlotte but with Palmetto State ties, has been named South Carolina State Librarian. He will begin his tenure with the SCSL on March 19, 2007.

Goble’s background is unique and includes a blend of staff and management experience in commercial and nonprofit settings as well as different library settings, both public and academic. He most recently served as Dean of Libraries at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte where he lead the effort to establish that institution as a technological leader in community college libraries. Under his leadership the College converted to a web-based library system, participated in a state library supported 24/7 reference service (one of the first community colleges to do so), and instituted instant messaging based reference.

Prior to his service with Central Piedmont, Goble’s library experience included stints at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Library, North Carolina State University Libraries, and the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Before his library career, Goble spent some eighteen years in management positions in the banking industry. He was assistant vice president of South Carolina National Bank in Columbia, and vice president of NationsBank, Charlotte. He also served as a captain in the US Marine Corps and is a Vietnam veteran.

Goble received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English at The Citadel where he was a Regimental Commander, Commander Summeral Guards, and a member of the Presidential Advisory Committee. He earned a Master of Arts degree in American Literature at the University of South Carolina and a Master of Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is a member of the American Library Association, the North Carolina Library Association, the North Carolina Council of Community College Library Administrators, and is the immediate past president of the Metrolina Library Association.
