SF Board of Supervisors seeks authority over federal law enforcement

conservator writes “The San Francisco Board of Supervisors is seeking authority to approve federal law enforcement requests for private (e.g., library) records from San Francisco city departments. Proposition E, which goes before voters on the March 2 ballot, was approved by eight members of the Board–including then-supervisor Mayor Gavin Newsom. A legislative aide to Supervisor Jake McGoldrick, who sponsored the measure, is quoted in the report as saying that federal officials probably will not challenge the ordinance if voters approve it: ‘they’ll ignore us.'”

    Why incur the cost?
    It costs money to put an issue on the ballot. It is not cheap and in this case may be costs that are never picked up from other funding sources. I recognize and understand it is intended to be an act of civil disobedience to send a message to Attorney General Ashcroft and President Bush.

    With the state of library funding across the United States not being the greatest, why should money be spent on something that might prove to be frivolous? If the money could be reallocated to libraries instead, I would not doubt some unique and creative things could be done with it.

    I recognize that this is an act of free speech. It is totally proper. I am not against it in terms of it being a speech act. I just think the money that this effort will cost could be perhaps used better for funding local libraries to provide real and actual services here and now.
