Sex God Stays on Montana School Shelves

School District voted unanimously January 12 to retain Louise Rennison’s On the Bright Side, I’m Now the Girlfriend of a Sex God: Further Confessions of Georgia Nicolson in the district’s middle-school libraries. The book had been challenged by Pius Ruby, whose 12-year-old attends the Sacajawea Middle School. Ruby feared that an unstable person seeing a girl reading the book might think from the title that the girl was promiscuous and stalk her, according to the January 11 Bozeman Daily Chronicle.”

    Man, that’s a stretch

    While I can understand that most people that challenge a book are concerned about their children (and by extension, everybody else’s children) reading a book, usually for reasons that perfectly reasonable, this reason is perfectly unreasonable! If we have to restrict access to materials based on what an “unbalanced” person might think about the reader of the materials, we’re going to have a pretty small library indeed!

    Worried about unstable people?
    Wow. Okay. Regrettably I am not too far removed from finishing off my master’s degree in library science. If books were proposed to be removed due to unstable people, I would never be able to build a library and neither would any of the three beautiful young ladies who also focused on cataloging with me in the program. The folks who were studying to be ref jocks and school media specialists in my program were not very much better off either than “The Catalogers”.

    From the source cited, I just have the reaction that the reasons stated seemed just specious. Then again, I am probably going to end up spending time tonight tracking down the original story ALA worked from to read, too.

    Okay, I have to ask if the catloguers, “ref jocks” and sms’ were considered unbalanced, which areas of library science are considered, um, “normal”? I love cataloguing and enjoying the ref services I provide here. I like working with the kids, most of the time…
