Self Contained Audio-Book

It looks like there is a self contained audio-book coming on the market. It is called the Playaway and it combines the listening device with the audio-book. From the pictures it looks roughly the size of a cigarette pack. The website for the company is http://www.playawaydigital.com/ One advantage for libraries would be that a seperate player would not be needed. Although headphones will need to be provided by the library or the patron.

    The Teleread blog had a entry about the Playaway. In the entry there is this question, Is this the ultimate DRM? This might be called the ultimate DRM (digital rights management) because the content is stored on the device and there is not a way to extract the file. Although this is true for the vast majority of the population I can gaurantee that some hacker will pop the device open and find a way to extract the file. Anything can be pirated although in this instance, like many, I don’t think piracy is really an issue to worry about. Although it might happen the impact on the market will be negligiable.

    No, it’s not. If the user can listen to it, then it can be copied. And you don’t even need to “pop the device open”. All you need is a patch cable.

    How about using an inexpensive MP3 player like the iPod Shuffle instead? One player could hold a complete audiobook (and the shuffle can be turned off).
