This USA Today Story has a neat sortable table of Books challenged 2003 – 2008.
Anne Marie Wlodarczyk of Lackawanna, N.Y., said she was outraged earlier this year when a local school board member asked that six books dealing with the occult be pulled from shelves at the local middle school.
“It’s important for children to read, and I will not let my child be hindered,” said Wlodarczyk, whose son is a high school freshman. “How do you expect a child to grow? I’m sorry, you can’t hide the outside world from them.”

“In 1993, school officials in Churchill County, Nev., received complaints about “objectionable language” in the American Heritage Dictionary. The officials decided to keep the dictionary anyway.”
Wouldn’t you love to meet these people? I just cannot imagine.
Ah yes, outlying rural Nevada
Well, a few things could be said about Churchill County. Churchill County’s population doesn’t break the 30,000 mark. The county is considered part of the “outlying rural” region of the state. The county seat is Fallon which is home to a Naval Air Station. As with most of the state, the largest landowner there is the US Government.
Having lived in outlying rural Nevada, I can say that it is cattle country and a small town atmosphere prevails. Cattle ranching, mining, and farming are some of the larger civilian endeavors out there. The Air Force and the Navy have bases throughout rural Nevada as well. Things out in rural Nevada can be a wee bit strange.
That this only happened in Fallon is what surprised me. If it happened there, I would have at least expected reports from Winnemuca and/or Eureka.

OLV represent!
I really have no idea what that means, but I was baptized at OLV.
My mom used to threaten to send me to Father Baker’s, but I guess she just didn’t have the energy to drive me there and drop me off.
Of course my mom was a parent and she was interested in what I read, and if it was not appropriate she would find something else for me to read. Mom went to Rosary Hill College and trained as an English teacher, but back then it was teacher or nurse for women.
This school board member should let the school librarain be a librarian. In NYS there are licensing requirements for Public Librarians, and School Librarians (I hold professional certificate # 21539 from the University of the State of New York, Education Department), any idiot can run for school board, and frequently they are elected.
