School libraries lose as districts slash costs

Sad Story Out of Detroit, where school libraries in Metro Detroit are being left with with skeleton staffs, reduced hours and outdated book collections.

The newest round of budget cuts may mean more school library closings, particularly in Detroit, which will likely have to lay off librarians this summer. Even districts in communities such as Birmingham and Livonia are considering reducing staff and book-buying budgets to make ends meet.

    School Libraries Hurting
    It is amazing when the big push is on for higher MEAP Reading scores and statistics show that those schools with libraries do far better on state/standardized tests then those without that library programs are being slashed in monies and in staffing.
    We have not had a formal budget in over two years. To say we are behind in current, up-to-date materials for student use is putting it mildly. It seems no one wants to correlate the effects that closing libraries in schools will have on student performance on state/standardized tests.
