Looks like all that glitters is not golden in Salt Lake City. AP Says A City Council member wants to know more about why Salt Lake City’s new library is having construction problems less than three years after it opened.
“If there are things that weren’t done correctly, that aren’t finished or need to be repaired, we need to hear about that now,” councilwoman Nancy Saxton said Tuesday in a copyright story by the Deseret Morning News.
The $84 million project opened in February 2003 and some of the early problems have been cracked paving stones, crumbling stairs and water in the underground parking area.
Not unusual
When my dad showed me around the library last time I was visiting home (I grew up in Salt Lake City) he mentioned that the glass covering the indoor courtyard had been leaking and the library had to get it fixed. There are probably other construction errors that have arisen but aren’t newsworthy. As noted in the article, these kinds of problems aren’t that unusual following the construction of a large building, especially one with a somewhat experimental design.
