RIAA Says Ripping CDs to Your iPod is NOT Fair Use

This EFF Post says As part of the on-going DMCA rule-making proceedings, the RIAA and other copyright industry associations submitted a filing that includedthat space-shifting and format-shifting do not count as noninfringing uses, even when you are talking about making copies of your own CDs.

    Change in Stance
    This appears to be a 180 change in stance from what it has always been. An artist would be stupid to not allow someome to download music to a computer or iPod after paying for the CD. I hope if rulings come out that make this happen, they make some type of label that says cannot be copied for personal use, so I can invest money elsewhere. I also want to know how think plan you checking my iPod? The traditional recording industry is trying to take themselves right our of rotation I guess.

    Needle heads
    Usually I agree with the RIAA but this is nonsense. If I bought I can listen to it through whatever ever medium I wish as long as I don’t dispose of the media I bought.

    If I want to convert the CD to paper tape then I should be able to as long as I don’t give or sell the CD.

    Someone way want to inform the nice folks at iTunes because they say I can burn audio CDs for the car once I’ve paid the 99 cents for the song.

    If the RIAA wants to test this case they can come on over. (Although I haven’t burned any songs I own yet they can wait while I do. I’ll make tea.)
