Reading Buddies are Good Buddies

In Santa Cruz CA, members of the local Rotary Club meet every Wednesday and Thursday with middle schoolers and share a good book or two. It’s part of a Reading Buddy program at the E.A. Hall Middle School; the kids get a lot out of the program, the adults may enjoy it even more.

Artemisa Cortez, a school principal, notices the changes, and is constantly thanking the rotary club, urging them to recruit more.

Mentors of any kind are always welcome, she said. All subjects are fair game.

“Everytime I walk into the library, I’m amazed at the level of interaction that’s going on between the student and the mentor,” she said. “And it’s nice to have somebody to look up to, a role model.” Story from The Santa Cruz Sentinel.
