Public Libraries becoming entrepreneurs

Public libraries in southern California are becoming more like businesses, striving to attract patrons and to make money.

In Orange County, Calif., techniques include using secret shoppers to test the quality of service, allowing drinks and snacks in most of the library and setting aside quiet areas while patrons are free to talk and even use cell phones in the rest of the library, the Orange County Register reports. Competition from the Internet and from bookstores with comfortable chairs and cafes has spurred the change, the newspaper says.
