Punk Richard Hell Gives Papers to NYU

Early punk performer Richard Hell, former member of Television and the Voidoids and New York poet and scenester, has found a home for his papers at New York University’s Fales Library. The library is building a collection of materials documenting the downtown NY art scene of the 1970s and 80s. Hell, 54, has been collecting and archiving his materials since an early age saying, “I assume that’s what you do, save things.” Included in the collection are letters, lyrics, posters, set lists and erotic drawings.     Hell papers maybe not entirely a “gift”
    Well, maybe receiving $50,000 from the Fales for his papers, as Richard Hell did (as the library’s director Marvin Taylor details in the Times article) is cheap at the price for our literary punk, but I wouldn’t exactly call the presentation of the archive a “gift!” I do think Hell is a genius though and the collection really is a bargain.

    Yes, Rochelle, you should fix your item as previous commenter recommends. I’ve seen your misinformation quoted elsewhere. Mr. Hell did not give the papers to the library, they were purchased for $50,000. The TIMES piece states this clearly.
