JET writes “Yesterday marked the death of Ernest Gallo, who along with his brother Julio started the first major California winery, based on what they had learned as descendants of the Piedmont region of Italy. According to this report, their first batch was formulated on a recipe in a book borrowed from the Modesto CA library.
