Psychic barred from séance at Ripon’s public library

Anonymous Patron writes “It Seems like Irma Slage should’ve seen this one coming. Complaints from fewer than a dozen Ripon residents led Mayor Chuck Winn to cancel an appearance by a self-proclaimed psychic at the local public library, leading to allegations of religious blackmail and censorship. “It took away my rights,” .Slage said.”

    Library Bill of Rights IGNORED
    There is something non logical about this statement within the context of the article. (quote)The mayor said he got two e-mails and talked to about six other residents before pushing to cancel the program, but he was confident that the handful of opinions represented the sentiment of the community at large.(unquote)

    Okay, so how many against vs. how many people showed up and were for? That would be 8 vs. 40 – 40 people who showed up at the library who wanted the psychic to be there. That seems like a majority (compared to the 8 votes against) to me.

    Sentiment of the community ? I think that was what the mayor would like to think, but he cannot really prove that! I wonder what would happen if everyone in that community voted.

    Did the Library staff get a vote?

    One of the Tenents for the Library’s Bill of Rights is

    (quote) Libraries which make exhibit spaces and meeting rooms available to the PUBLIC THEY SERVE should make facilities available on an equitable basis, REGARDLESS OF BELIEFS, Or affiliations of individuals or groups requesting their use (end quote)

    So, which (witch) is more important?

    First it sounds like (though not completely obvious) it was a library program which is different then simply making space available. Second, if it wasn’t a library program, we have a policy at our library that limits room use to nonprofits. It says she’s an author but does she make a living giving readings? I’m not really sure where this would fall.

    As for the 8 vs 40, the program was canceled before the 40 showed up (and it was handled badly if 40 people still showed up after it was canceled). And if the right 8 people are the ones calling, people from positions of making your life miserable, then yes that can carry a lot of weight. Who knows, maybe those 8 people were contacted by people themselves?
