Proposed Government Funding for Libraries in 2006

Brian G. writes “The funding levels for 2006 spending on libraries was announced on June 9, 2005. The American Library Association has issued a press release that summarizes the suggested spending levels.
While the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) saw almost a $7 million increase, I am still shocked by the decrease in education and funding to support school libraries. The U.S. politicians continues to ignore the importance of education.”

    Rochelle did not say anything about being shocked about “the decrease in education and funding to support school libraries.” I did. I also specifically said “school libraries” not education overall.

    Funding to school libraries has decreased drastically, as demonstrateed by lack of new materials, schools without librarians, etc. Despite whether education budgets are increasing, as you state, school libraries have not seen the same increases.

    Sorry. With moderators and contributers, sometimes it is hard to tell who is saying what. I’ll correct that. But I didn’t misquote you. You did say decrease in education, and I lifted the quote. And why should the federal gov’t be funding school libraries at any level? My property taxes are outrageous and support the schools.

    My entire quote is about libraries ONLY. I said “education and funding TO support school libraries.” It is entirely about school libraries.

    The reason that the federal government needs to support libraries is that your local funding is spent on everything else involved in education. In addition much of the federal funds goes into literacy programs.

    I see you were in Ohio. Are you still there? If so, I understand why you are disappointed with school funding. The funding by property taxes was ruled illegal, yet it continues under the current Ohio administration.
