All other things aside the effect it has had on Yahoo is great. A few years ago we had an era on the web in which free email services and homepages were rife, but then slowly commercialisation has taken its toll. A service like Google offering email means the dominant players might need to loosen the strings a little, which can only be good for us all.

Hotmail is now set to increase storage
Now Microsoft has been influenced by the tide

Hotmail will increase their 2MB email space limit for their Free users, as well as paid users email quota.

When I made fun of Orkut, you invited me. Now I am making fun of Gmail. I also acknowledge that Gmail does exist, was not an April Fool’s joke, and that the joke was on me. But I won’t really know until I can see it with my very own eyes.

Somewhat paranoid, IMHO. “we don’t use Gmail, but we’re sure the ads aren’t well-targeted”. Well, I do use it, and some of them are actually interesting enough for me to click through. Because Gmail has picked up on my topic of conversation, and actually served up some relevant sites.

The privacy issues are more of a concern, however, their quoting from the Gmail privacy policy is somewhat selective, here’s the full text:

“Beyond this [including your name and email address as part of outgoing messages], we do not disclose your personally identifying information to third parties unless we believe we are required to do so by law or have a good faith belief that such access, preservation or disclosure is reasonably necessary to (a) satisfy any applicable law, regulation, legal process or governmental request,”

Besides which, the government hardly needs to request emails from Google – it’s monitoring them anyway…cf Project Echelon. You don’t have privacy on the net. If someone really wants to track you, they can.
