Possible ebook device

There is an article in the New York Times about Palm’s new LifeDrive that is a PDA with a 4gb hard drive similar to an iPod. You can use the device to move files and it can open Word Documents. The possibilities as an ebook device seem strong.

    The most serious cause for pause, though, is the LifeDrive’s unfortunate case of narcolepsy. To save power, the hard drive stops spinning between uses. That’s fine. What’s not so fine, however, is that it takes six seconds to spin up again and feed its data into the palmtop’s memory so you can use it.

    I’m going to go out on a limb and predict the death of palm.

    My vintage Palm M515 has Documents to Go to read .doc files, and MobiPocket, Palm Reader, and Adobe Reader to read ebooks. So the news here is…what?

    A 4gb drive. A college student carrying ebooks on this device would have 4gb available. How much do you have on your Palm? Probably no more than 128mb if you have an expansion card. Does your current Palm have the bluetooth communication ability? Also the screen is bigger.
