Pope Opposes Harry Potter Novels

From Life Site: a note that said that Pope Benedict XVI (former Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger) expressed serious reservations about the novels is now finally being revealed to the English-speaking world–still under the impression that the Vatican approves of the Potter novels.
In a letter dated March 7, 2003 Cardinal Ratzinger thanked Kuby for her “instructive” book Harry Potter – gut oder böse (Harry Potter- good or evil?), in which Kuby says the Potter books corrupt the hearts of the young, preventing them from developing a properly ordered sense of good and evil, thus harming their relationship with God while that relationship is still in its infancy.

    Gee and why would that be, maybe becasue an official from the previous administration went on record in support of Potter?

    Since when did Rumsfeld-speak become the norm at the Vatican?

    Ah well

    Believe me, I’m not intending to knock on Christianity here. But let’s compare books for a minute, namely Harry Potter and the Bible.

    Both involve death (Apparently the new Potter has a death and, in good Disney style, the first major event in Harry’s life is the murder of his parents.), cheating, betrayal, wars, and the fairly eternal war between good and evil.

    However, at least last I checked, the Potter books didn’t have incest (Lot and his daughters), so that’s one point for Mr. Potter.

    Yet, somewhere around two billion people see the Bible as a holy book and base at least some parts of their moral existence on the teachings contained therein. So that’s, um, at least a couple billion points for the Bible.

    Ironically, you have to giggle at an organization expressing concern over the corruption of small children while said organization is involved in a scandal revolving around the rape and molestation of children by their officials.

    Meanwhile you have to stand gaping mouthed at the bullshit security measures surrounding a childen’s book.

    Yeah, I say they come out about even in some places, but really, I think the Bible still has Potter beat in terms of overall readership and total sales.

    Since when did Rumsfeld [cnn.com]-speak become the norm at the Vatican?

    These things happen when Germans take over.

    …and I have to agree, priorities here are more than a little skewed. There’s an article in today’s NYTimes having to do with how summer camps are dealing with children unable to be there (bookstore/library) the split-second the new book comes out.

    Hey kids, how about enjoying nature, sports, friendship, a dip in the lake etc. while you’re out there at summer camp?
