Pittsfield MA School Library Named After Astronaut

On the first day of school and years from now, when pupils dive into books at Stearns Elementary School, they will do so in the Stephanie Wilson Library.

Wilson, Pittsfield’s beloved daughter and astronaut, and a Stearns alumnus, was on hand for the dedication yesterday at the Lebanon Avenue school.

“This is quite an honor for both myself and my family,” Wilson said. “I’m humbled.”

A Pittsfield native, she was the second black woman to travel into space. She was part of a seven-member NASA crew that traveled on the space shuttle Discovery to the International Space Station on July 4, 2006. Nice photos and story from the Berkshire Eagle (incidentally, the paper where journalist Daniel Pearl started his career).
