And here I was thinking people only complained about books being bad for the children, two patrons complained about children seeing an artwork in Chesapeake, VA, Public Library’s central branch. Virginian Pilot – Norfolk,VA says For almost two weeks this month, the painting, called “Morning Dreamer,” appeared on a wall near the library’s main entrance, along with other works by local painter Karen Kinser. Roughly 12,000 people walked past the piece, based on library estimates that a thousand people a day visit the building on Cedar Road.
But after two patrons complained about children seeing the artwork, the library staff in mid-July moved the painting to the other side of the building, behind some bookshelves.
They say the painting shows a woman lying in bed, daydreaming . The side of her breast and hip can be seen, but the woman’s nipples and genitalia are not exposed to the viewer.
“More nudity can be observed at any public pool, beach or shopping mall,” said Kinser, who questions the mindset of the patrons who see the work as “titillating.”
Slippery slope illustration
Now here’s a fine illustration of the slippery slope in action. Suddenly, it doesn’t make any difference that neither genitals or mammilae are showing, there’s too much skin. Isn’t that the rationale that led the Taliban to have women beaten in the streets for showing their ankles? I wonder how long it will be before the U.S. ultra-self-rigtheous lunatics also outlaw paper bags as offensive to God Almighty.
I am constantly amazed
by the ignorance of some people.
Maybe all those paintings that include breasts and hips at the Metropolitan Museum should be moved to the basement too…
Re:I am constantly amazed
A museum is a little different then a public library. A public library is not a free for all. I’m not supporting the removal of the painting, I haven’t seen it but the environment of a public building has to be held to a much more rigid standard then the what books are kept on the shelves.
